What is Helichrysum Italicum?

Helichrysum italicum, also known as Immortelle, is a small Mediterranean perennial herb that belongs to the Asteraceae family. This aromatic plant is renowned for its striking appearance, distinctive fragrance, and a countless of therapeutic and cosmetic properties. The name comes from the everlasting beauty of the flower because once you cut the flower, it keeps its original color, structure and timeless beauty.

Physical Characteristics of the Plant

The Helichrysum plant usually grows to a height between 20-60 cm and it has a compact, bushy form with a numerous branching stems. The leaves are narrow, elongated and covered with fine silver/gray hairs which gives them a distinctive appearance. Flowers of the Helichrysum plant are usually recognized by their golden yellow color and the dense, rounded clusters at the tips of the stems.

They usually grow in the Mediterranean region and thrives in areas with a mild climate, full sunlight and well-drained, rocky soils containing the perfect mix of lime stone. The Helichrysum essential oil is one of the most expensive oils because of the specific requirements on the environment, the harvesting and distilling process to getting it tested in neutral labs to be able to ensure top quality containing all the medicinal compounds of this powerhouse of a plant. The extraction of the essential oil involves a careful process of steam-distilling using around 1,5 ton of plants to get 1 litre of Helichrysum essential oil.

The Smell of Helichrysum Italicum

Some people call this plant “curry plant” because it smells a bit like curry. Some people say it smells like honey or even that it has this strong earthy smell. The truth is the main components of this plant are alpha-pinene and limonene, which also brings a scent of pine and lemon.
